Single Parents/Same Sex Relationships

Two dads with their child, reading a book symbolizing family togetherness

Parenting is a journey filled with joy, challenges, and unique experiences. Single parents and same-sex parents often deal with additional challenges in their journey. Here’s a closer look at the statistics and issues they face, alongside the resources and supports available to them:

  • In 2019, almost 29% of people identifying as LGBT in the U.S. reported raising children.
  • Same-gender couples are six times more likely to be raising foster children and four times more likely to be raising an adopted child compared to heterosexual couples.
  • Single parents, including those in the LGBT community, face both “situational” and sometimes biological infertility, adding layers to the parenting experience.

Issues Single Parents/Same-Sex Parents Are Facing

  • Legal and Social Hurdles – From adoption challenges to societal stigma, legal and social challenges are significant.
  • Financial Strain – Single-income households or additional costs related to assisted reproductive technologies can pose financial challenges.
  • Emotional and Mental Health – Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and isolation are reported among single and same-sex parents, often exacerbated by societal pressures and lack of support.
  • Lack of Supportive Community – The traditional extended family or community support networks may be less accessible, leading to feelings of isolation and helplessness.
  • Navigating Parenthood Identity – For some LGBT parents, finding relatable parenting models and communities can be difficult.

Resources Available

  • Community Groups and Online Forums – These provide valuable spaces for sharing experiences and receiving support.
  • Legal and Advocacy Services – Organizations offer guidance on rights and navigating legal hurdles related to parenting, adoption, and family planning.
  • Mental Health and Counselling Services – Targeted support for mental health issues, including postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress management.
  • Financial Assistance Programs – In Canada, several programs support families financially, including the Canada Child Benefit, GST/HST credit, and the Canada Carbon Rebate. These are designed to help individuals and families with lower incomes by providing monthly payments to assist with the costs of raising children. Additionally, provincial and territorial benefits and credits are available to support families further, regardless of income, ensuring that parents have access to the financial resources they need to care for their children effectively.
